Engaging with Your Coach

Once you receive messages from your assigned first-year-experience coach, we encourage you to respond promptly and keep their contact information handy for future reference.

Throughout the year, your dedicated coach will be actively reaching out to you, providing valuable support and guidance. However, remember that open communication is key! Don't hesitate to reach out to your coach anytime you have questions, concerns, or simply want to discuss anything related to your school experience.

Do Coaches Differ From Advisors, Counselors & Mentors?

First-year-experience coaching is more effective when it works alongside the existing university services. By supporting and connecting students to the various resources at Widener, this program provides additional tools and support to help them succeed. While coaches, advisors, counselors, and mentors may appear similar, they play unique roles, each contributing to your success in distinct ways.

Widener's academic advisors are dedicated to providing personal support to students, ensuring they have a solid plan for academic success. They offer valuable guidance in selecting classes, pursuing internships, extracurricular opportunities, and hands-on experiences that will enhance students' career prospects. Additionally, they lend a helping hand when students consider changing their major, guiding them toward a new direction.

The Office of Student Success collaborates with advisors on a daily basis to support students. Coaches assist students in identifying potential risk factors and help them develop essential skills to overcome barriers, addressing immediate needs while fostering long-term personal growth and development. Through this process, students acquire valuable skills that empower them to face challenges, overcome obstacles, and successfully achieve their academic goals with confidence.

Widener's mental health clinicians or professionals offer a range of services, including assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression, therapy sessions, and prevention programs. They address various personal, emotional, and social concerns, supporting students through issues like loss, sadness, anxiety, socialization difficulties, substance abuse, and interpersonal relationships.

First-year-experience coaches collaborate with counselors to focus on specific aspects of a student's life that could impact their overall well-being and success. This involves helping students develop essential skills like time management and goal setting while addressing any barriers hindering their short- and long-term success. It's important to note that Success Coaches do not delve deeply into mental health issues or replace counseling services. Instead, they are trained to recognize when to suggest counseling and provide appropriate resources when needed.

Within the Widener community, mentors provide students with diverse advice and support drawn from their own life experiences. These mentors, often volunteers, are selected based on their expertise in specific jobs or fields and may introduce their student mentees to influential individuals within industries or organizations. Students often see their mentors as role models who guide them along their desired career paths.

First-year-experience coaches play a crucial role in supporting our mentors by fostering long-term personal growth and development in students. Through small yet meaningful changes and the integration of new strategies, habits, and mindsets, the coaches empower students to thrive and succeed in their lives.

Rediet Abera 260x300

Rediet Abera

Hello! I'm Rediet Abera, a first-year graduate student in Clinical Psychology at Widener University. Originally from Ethiopia, I relocated to the U.S. in 2018 for my undergraduate studies. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, Child Development, and Family Studies from Minnesota State University, Mankato, in May 2022. With two years of experience in the mental health field before starting my PsyD program this year, I am passionate about supporting students from diverse backgrounds in achieving their goals here at Widener. As an academic coach I value sharing my experiences as both an undergraduate and a graduate student, and I'm always eager to learn from others. I enjoy socializing with friends and family, reading, exploring nature, and trying new foods in my free time.

Hi! My name is Paige Goldberg and I am a rising first year in Widener’s Institute for Graduate Clinical Psychology. I am originally from Bucks County, PA, but graduated with a degree in Psychology from Elon University in North Carolina. In college, I was involved in many different aspects of campus and really allowed myself to get immersed which enhanced my college experience. In my free time, I enjoy traveling, reading, and doing yoga. My favorite place I have traveled to is London! I wish you all the best of luck with your transition into college.

Hey! I’m Bry, pronounced like “bree” with a y. A few fun things about me: I love online shopping, makeup, music (especially R&B and hip hop), pop culture, and social justice, all of which fuel my creativity and perspective. During my undergrad years, I had the privilege of being a Residential Advisor and Learning Assistant. These roles taught me the value of support and creating a welcoming environment for students navigating new and sometimes challenging situations. Now, as an academic coach, I hope to assist and empower you on your educational journey!

Jillian Klener headshot

Jillian Klener

Hello! My name is Jillian Kelnar (she/her) and I am a first-year doctoral student in Widener's IGCP program! A little bit about me- I graduated from University of Wisconsin-Madison in May 2023 as a psychology major with a certificate in criminal justice. I spent the past year working in an adolescent depression recovery unit as a Behavior Specialist. In my free time, I love checking out restaurants in Philly, playing board games, watching Survivor, and dogsitting! I'm excited to work with you and make the transition to college more manageable!

Joy Krasner headshot

Joy Krasner

Hi there! I’m Joy, a 2nd-year PsyD student in Clinical Psychology here at Widener. I'm originally from upstate New York (go Bills!) and earned my undergraduate degree at Hamilton College. A few fun facts about me: I’m a big fan of scary movies, a dedicated dog-lover, and a vegan who’s passionate about Philly’s unbeatable plant-based food scene. When I’m not cramming for exams or hanging out with friends, you’ll likely find me strolling around Philly with my headphones on—it’s my favorite way to unwind, especially during the fall when the leaves start to change.

Beyond these hobbies, I’m a lover of learning and deeply committed to helping fellow students reach their goals. Thinking back to my own undergraduate experience, I recognize how important it is to feel heard and supported during challenging times. Most importantly, I believe in empowering students with the right resources and support to successfully navigate the stressors of a new college environment. I am committed to meeting people where they are, striving to understand and adapt to each person's needs, and working together to overcome obstacles and carve a path forward. I’m excited to meet you and work together to make the most of your Widener experience!

Ravi Louis headshot

Hi! My name is Ravi (He/Him), welcome to the Widener Pride! I'm a second-year grad student in the school of Clinical Psychology and am excited to be part of your Personal Success Team! A bit about me: I'm originally from right outside New York City but I went to college in Virginia and for some reason I'm a Boston Celtics fan (woohoo for Banner #18!). I love being outdoors in nature, I enjoy reading, and I'm a major sci-fi/fantasy nerd. I remember starting college and feeling overwhelmed between being around completely new people, adjusting to college classes, and being away from home for the first time. It's exciting but it can also be a lot! I hope to provide you with a space of encouragement, support - academically or otherwise - and collaboration to work towards your goals and create your community at Widener. Looking forward to meeting you!

Calley Mullin headshot

Calley Mullin

My name is Calley Mullin and I am a first-year student in the PsyD program. When I was in college, I was a peer mentor, and I really enjoyed getting to know first-year students and supporting them as they transitioned to college life. College is a huge change, and I want to be here as a sounding board for any thoughts, feelings and concerns that come up. In my free time, I enjoy playing soccer, going to the gym, reading, and doing various arts and crafts. I can't wait to meet you!

Sharouq Mir headshot

Sharouq Mir

My name is Sharouq Mir and I'm an international student from Dubai, now a Clinical Psychology doctorate student. Moving here for university was my first time living away from home, and I know all too well the mix of excitement and loneliness that can come with it; this experience has shaped me and inspired me to become an academic coach, ready to support you as you navigate your own paths. Books are my constant companions. I'm captivated by the magical realism of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and the powerful prose of James Baldwin. Right now, I'm lost in the pages of "The Brothers Karamazov" by Dostoevsky.

In addition to English, I’m trilingual and have a soft spot for poetry, no matter the language. Art fuels my soul; I love exploring art museums, exhibitions, even getting hands-on with pottery. I am also a fan of French films, and when I’m not immersed in art, you might catch me ice skating or rollerblading.  I grew up as a quiet kid, but now I love connecting with people and sharing stories. Enrolling in a university far from home was a transformative experience for me, and I understand the highs and lows that come with it. My goal is to help you find your balance, enjoy the ride, and make the most of this chapter in your life.  I look forward to meeting you all and embarking on this journey together!

Michelle Zaslavski headshot

Michelle Zaslavski

"Hey everyone! My name is Michelle Zaslavski and I’m looking forward to working with you and supporting you in your first year. I wanted to become an academic coach because I was helped when I was in undergrad by academic counselors. I definitely struggled a bit in my transition to college, and their support was very valuable to me. A few things about me: I’m currently in the PsyD graduate program at Widener and just moved to Philadelphia last year. I spend most of my time outside of school reading fiction, watching TV (I especially love animated content), working on my pottery, doing yoga or cuddling with my cat Parker. I’m a big sushi fan and love seeing live music or dance performances. I am also obsessed with swimming in the ocean and have a scuba diving license. Again, I’m really excited to meet all of you and would love to do what I can to make your first years as great as possible!"
