Engaging with Your Coach

Once you receive messages from your assigned first-year-experience coach, we encourage you to respond promptly and keep their contact information handy for future reference.

Throughout the year, your dedicated coach will be actively reaching out to you, providing valuable support and guidance. However, remember that open communication is key! Don't hesitate to reach out to your coach anytime you have questions, concerns, or simply want to discuss anything related to your school experience.

Do Coaches Differ From Advisors, Counselors & Mentors?

First-year-experience coaching is more effective when it works alongside the existing university services. By supporting and connecting students to the various resources at Widener, this program provides additional tools and support to help them succeed. While coaches, advisors, counselors, and mentors may appear similar, they play unique roles, each contributing to your success in distinct ways.

Widener's academic advisors are dedicated to providing personal support to students, ensuring they have a solid plan for academic success. They offer valuable guidance in selecting classes, pursuing internships, extracurricular opportunities, and hands-on experiences that will enhance students' career prospects. Additionally, they lend a helping hand when students consider changing their major, guiding them toward a new direction.

The Office of Student Success collaborates with advisors on a daily basis to support students. Coaches assist students in identifying potential risk factors and help them develop essential skills to overcome barriers, addressing immediate needs while fostering long-term personal growth and development. Through this process, students acquire valuable skills that empower them to face challenges, overcome obstacles, and successfully achieve their academic goals with confidence.

Widener's mental health clinicians or professionals offer a range of services, including assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression, therapy sessions, and prevention programs. They address various personal, emotional, and social concerns, supporting students through issues like loss, sadness, anxiety, socialization difficulties, substance abuse, and interpersonal relationships.

First-year-experience coaches collaborate with counselors to focus on specific aspects of a student's life that could impact their overall well-being and success. This involves helping students develop essential skills like time management and goal setting while addressing any barriers hindering their short- and long-term success. It's important to note that Success Coaches do not delve deeply into mental health issues or replace counseling services. Instead, they are trained to recognize when to suggest counseling and provide appropriate resources when needed.

Within the Widener community, mentors provide students with diverse advice and support drawn from their own life experiences. These mentors, often volunteers, are selected based on their expertise in specific jobs or fields and may introduce their student mentees to influential individuals within industries or organizations. Students often see their mentors as role models who guide them along their desired career paths.

First-year-experience coaches play a crucial role in supporting our mentors by fostering long-term personal growth and development in students. Through small yet meaningful changes and the integration of new strategies, habits, and mindsets, the coaches empower students to thrive and succeed in their lives.

Alexis Kapij 260x300

Alexis Kapij

I am passionate about helping students become the best versions of themselves through creative problem-solving and personalized support. As a straight-A student in high school, I faced a turning point in college when I realized that natural ability alone wasn’t enough. I had to develop effective study habits, organizational systems, and test-taking techniques—skills I now teach with empathy and insight. During my undergraduate years, I balanced a demanding schedule that included two on-campus jobs (Resident Assistant and Ambassador), an off-campus role at a psychiatric hospital, leadership as President of the Psychology Honors Society and Co-Captain of the Cheerleading Squad, and research in a campus lab. This is where my love for a color-coded planner and to-do lists really began to grow. Currently pursuing my Doctor of Education at Drexel University, I remain deeply connected to the student experience. I understand the challenges of juggling multiple responsibilities and the toll it can take on mental health and motivation. I particularly enjoys helping students with time management, goal setting, study strategies, test anxiety, and mastering course material.

Before joining Widener University, I served as an Area Coordinator. I earned my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Villanova University in 2022 and my Bachelor’s in Psychology from Rutgers University in 2020. In my free time, I enjoy crafting, attending concerts, traveling, and spending quality time with my fiancé and our dog.

Joseph Mazzerina

Joseph Mazzerina

I grew up in Wayne, New Jersey, and graduated from Wayne Valley High School. I then went on to obtain a bachelor's degree in psychology at Montclair State University with coursework that emphasized biology and chemistry. During this time and shortly after, I worked at Chilton Medical Center in Pompton Plains, New Jersey, as a Patient Care Technician (PCT), and as a Medical Assistant (MA) at University Health and Urgent Care in Totowa, New Jersey. Both experiences afforded me the opportunity to develop clinical skills working with patients diagnosed with a wide range of medical conditions. I then graduated with a master's degree in neuroscience from Drexel University College of Medicine, where I conducted novel research on alcohol dependence and honed my presentation skills by speaking at institutional conferences. I'm very passionate about understanding the relationship between the nervous system and behavior, and subsequently helping individuals overcome neuropsychological conditions. I have extensive experience navigating the rigors of university-level education and am dedicated to helping students overcome academic challenges.

I am deeply committed to supporting students throughout their academic journey by providing individualized attention, guidance, and advocacy. Over the past 11 years at Widener University, I have had the privilege of gaining valuable institutional knowledge through roles in the School of Engineering, Graduate Admissions, and now in the Office of Student Success.

In my current role, I offer academic coaching and coordinate tutoring services across campus, helping students build the skills and confidence they need to thrive. I am passionate about lifelong learning and continually inspired by the dedication and resilience students show in pursuing their educational goals. Every day, I strive to be a trusted resource and a steady support system for their success.

Outside of work, I enjoy relaxing by the pool or at a beach with family and friends. Recently my husband and I have discovered a shared love for travel, and we are excited to explore new places together.
