Academic Advising with Faculty

Academic faculty advisors are here to help you navigate your academic journey, translating your goals and interests into a successful educational experience. They assist with understanding and navigating academic requirements, policies, and procedures, guiding you in course selection.

Here's how you can make the most of your advisor's support:

  • Regular Meetings: Meet with your advisor each semester (by October/March) before registering for classes to ensure you're on track.
  • Stay Informed: Be aware of important policies, procedures, and academic deadlines by checking the course catalog and student handbooks available on catalog.widener.edu.
  • Understand Requirements: Familiarize yourself with university general education and academic program requirements.
  • Set Goals: Seek information and make decisions regarding your academic and career goals.
  • Use Resources: Take advantage of campus resources to enhance your academic experience and career preparedness.
  • Ask Questions: Write down questions and ask for help whenever you need it.
  • Take Responsibility: Assume final responsibility for course scheduling, program planning, and successful completion of graduation requirements.

Your academic advisor is a valuable resource to help you succeed, so make sure to build a meaningful relationship and utilize their support throughout your college journey.

Academic Coaching with a Trained Professional

Academic coaching conversations empower you to further enrich your Widener experience. When you meet with an academic coach, you’ll partner to develop a plan that establishes a path to achieving your academic goal. Along the way, we’ll help you identify personal barriers that may be impacting your success and work with you navigate these challenges.

The time you spend with an academic coach is personalized—it can be as long or as short as you need! With that said, an initial academic coaching conversation typically lasts between 30-60 minutes, depending on the academic support you need. Follow-up coaching conversations generally last 30 minutes. You can also meet with various coaches throughout the semester.

Tutoring with a Qualified Student Mentor

Trained student tutors are available to provide personalized, one-on-one support and walk-in sessions to help you excel in your course material.

Support is available for most introductory and upper-level undergraduate courses, as well as for subjects like physics, biology, chemistry, and engineering. Remember too, you can receive ongoing support from the Math Center and Writing Center.

To benefit from tutoring, you can:

  • Request one-on-one tutoring for specific courses.
  • Attend walk-in sessions for collaborative learning.
  • Seek help in understanding course material and improving grades.

To get started, complete the tutoring request form. Once you're assigned a tutor for a specific course, you can work with them for the remainder of the semester—no need to re-submit the form. If you want to request tutoring for an additional course, then you'll need to submit a new request form.

For more information contact the Tutoring Services Office at 610-499-1196 or tutoringservices@widener.edu or visit their website for current tutoring schedules.
